What is CNG?

CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas. It consists mainly of methane gas which when mixed with air can generate engine power. It can be used as an alternative to diesel, petrol, and propane/LPG.

It is effective in controlling air pollution as it produces less undesirable gases than diesel, petrol, and LPG. Therefore it is more environmentally friendly than other fuel products.

CNG is available at oil shops. CNG can also be collected from wastewater and landfills treatment plants. CNG is made by CNG and it is less than one percent of its standard atmospheric pressure. It is stored and distributed in very rigid spherical or cylindrical containers under a pressure of 20-25 MPa.

History of CNG

Models from the late 1800s implemented the use of natural gas as a fuel for automobiles.

The earliest natural gas engines were manufactured in the US, and soon after World War II, Italy and many other European countries implemented CNG as their primary engine fuel.

CNG is used in oil reservoirs. It can also be obtained from sewage treatment plants and landfill sites.

Natural gas is compressed to bring it to less than 1% of standard atmospheric pressure. It is maintained at a pressure of 20-25 MPa and delivered in fairly rigid cylindrical and spherical tanks.

Where is CNG used?

CNG is used in internal combustion engines.  It has been modified or manufactured for CNG use. It is commonly used in buses around the world. In India, it is used in buses as well as in three-wheeler autos and vehicles.

Its use as a vehicle fuel began in the late eighteenth century, and the first natural gas vehicles patented in the US after World War II were used as the main fuel by Italy and some other European countries. The source was accepted.

  • CNG is environmentally friendly as it emits less undesirable and harmful gases as compared to other alternatives i.e. diesel and petrol. CNG has the least pollution. The same petrol and diesel and especially diesel pollute more.
  • It extends the life of lubricating oils as it does not contaminate and dilute crankcase oil.
  • It provides a high auto-ignition temperature of 540 °C or higher.
  • Vehicles running on CNG are considered to be safer than vehicles running on petrol.

Disadvantages of CNG: CNG Full Form

  • Storage space is required for the CNG tank. You may have to sacrifice some space in the trunk (for cars), the truck bed (for pickup trucks), or the back seat (for SUVs). CNG cylinders can be heavy, with the added weight of the tank.
  • You get almost no boot space in the case of the CNG hatchback. In the case of MUVs and sedans too, you have to sacrifice a lot to have CNG inside your car from boot space.
  • The capacity of the CNG tank is less as compared to the petrol tank of your car. Hence, your car can cover less distance in a tank filled with CNG. Frequent visits to CNG stations and waiting in long queues can be a hassle at times.
  • Available in limited quantities:- Not every city like Delhi has CNG available in abundance. If you often take your car on road trips, CNG may not be the right fuel for you. You may find it difficult to find CNG stations in some states.

CNG does not contain lead, sulfate and as such it contains reactive hydrocarbons 70% and nitrogen oxides 85%. Methane gas is found in maximum quantity in it and due to this, it is colorless, odorless, non-toxic. Its use does not cause much harm to nature.
